BRINE TREATMENT

BRINE PRIMARY PURIFICATION

The saturated brine coming from Brine Saturator is treated by means of appropriate chemicals to perform primary brine purification in order to precipitate most of the raw salt contained impurities.

The main impurities normally contained in the saturated brine that must be removed because they can affect the membrane performance are the following;

The present operating instructions describe the production of 33% hydrochloric acid, from chlorine and hydrogen gas produced in the membrane electrolysis plant.

INTRODUCTION:

Simultaneous production of chlorine, Caustic soda solution and hydrogen from aqueous solution of alkaline chlorides by application of direct current, commonly known as the electrolysis of alkaline chlorides has been widely adopted in the chemical industry during the past 70 years. A rapid development created a great variety of processes and cell types but only a few well engineered designs have been retained for present commercial application.

The purpose of the plant is to concentrate the 30 % caustic coming out of the electrolysers to 50% caustic lye. This concentration is achieved by three multi effect evaporators. These evaporators concentrate the 30% caustic to 36 %, 42 % and eventually 50 % caustic lye. Multi effect evaporators are usually fed by 3 possible feed systems:

The concentration plant consists mainly of a final concentrator (1) which is heated by molten salt used as heat transfer medium. The concentrator operates under normal atmospheric pressure. The feed liquor will be supplied by means of a centrifugal pump (2) via a rota-transmitter (3) (rota-meter with magnetic transmission of the float movement and pneum. transmitter of the flow measurement), a pneum.

Operating Instructions

Dryers

Check the air pressure, temperature and natural gas pressure at the furnaces. Adjust these parameters if any deviation is observed. Normally air pressure should be between 400-450 mm WC and furnace temperature between 415-425 ºC. Check and note them hourly.

INTRODUCTION:

Sulfuric acid (oil of vitriol, H₂SO₄) is a colorless, oily liquid, dense, highly reactive, and miscible with water in all proportions. Heat is evolved when concentrated sulfuric acid is mixed with water and, as a safety precaution, the acid should be poured into the water rather than water poured into the acid.
